Kauai, Hawaii Photo Adventure
Feb 23-28, 2017
All Levels Welcome
Are you ready for an all out adventure of a lifetime? I am absolutely thrilled to announce this workshop to arguably the most beautiful place on Earth: the Garden Isle of Kauai! This is unlike any workshop I’ve done before. The only thing you need to worry about is getting to Kauai; we’ll take it from there! From the moment you land, everything will be taken care of, including our own personal chef! We’ll stay in a home together and explore the entire island by sea, land and air, leaving no stone unturned. You do NOT want to miss this!
What To Expect
This workshop is going to be jam packed. We’ll see the Napali Coast by exploring the Mountain Trails and Jungles, by sea from an exciting boat cruise and by air on a doors-off helicopter tour. We’ll see and experience the South side of the island and all that this location has to offer like Spouting Horn, The Poipu Arch and the Famous Shipwrecks Beach. We’ll kayak the Waialua river together as a group and walk to Secret Waterfalls hidden in the Jungle. We’ll photograph massive waves exploding into the air at Ke’e Beach, the treacherous surf at Queen’s Bath, the “Grand Canyon of Hawaii” known as Waimea Canyon, the picture perfect Hanalei Beach and so much more! Trust me when I say you will be worn out by the time we are done!

Gratuity and Tips
Tips for tour guides, chef, etc
Day 2 – Wake up early to photography sunrise at Hanalei Bay before heading back to enjoy a complete breakfast together as a group, talk about the days adventure and then set out again to explore the North Shore. We will stop at all the view areas, seeing the famous Hanalei Valley and surrounding mountains. Finally we will arrive at the beginning of the Napali Coast hiking trail were we will hike the two miles of the trail to the first beach at Hanakapai. Playing in the stream and ocean while enjoying a prepared lunch will be a wonderful way to experience your first day here in Paradise. We’ll photograph sunset at Ke’e Beach before heading back to the house for another meal prepared by our chef.
Day 3 – Wake up early (get used to this!) for sunrise at Waimea Canyon before heading back to enjoy a complete breakfast together as a group, talk about the days adventure and then set out for the “4 waterfalls in a day tour.” Hiku falls, Hopi falls, Opaekaa falls and Waialulu falls are all on our itinerary. Be prepared to get wet and feel what it is like swimming in your own private lagoon with a majestic waterfall in the background. Return back home for a fantastic lunch, then grab your snorkel gear and beach towels for a relaxing day at the beach. Finish up this amazing day shooting sunset at Queen’s Bath and another wonderfully prepared dinner from our master of culinary treats.
Day 4 – Wake up for sunrise (location TBD) and enjoy a complete breakfast together as a group, talk about the days adventure and then set out for an adventure of a lifetime. We will drive together to a Hawaiian Village and take off for a 6 hour Kayaking adventure up the Waialua river. Here we will explore the jungles of Kauai, search out secret waterfalls, see ancient Hawaiian fern grottos and cross mighty rivers like a tribe of natives. After this adventure we will return back home for a prepared lunch then off to the blue room cave which is a collapsed lava tube with a freshwater lagoon at the bottom. For sunset, we will be taking an ocean cruise of the NaPali Coast in search of humpback whales, bottlenose dolphins and rainbows with dinner included!
Day 5 – Sleep in and enjoy a complete breakfast together as a group, talk about the days adventure and then set out for a doors off helicopter tour of the entire island, including the star of the show, the NaPali coast. If you choose not to go on the Helicopter we will have other fun things for you to do. After your heavenly experience we will return home for another prepared lunch, then off to Poipu to do some last minute gift shopping and nature exploring at the world famous Spouting Horn, Poipu Arch and my favorite beach, Shipwrecks. If we have time before the sunset we can explore the sea caves that dot the coastline through the net work of secret paths. We’ll do our last sunset at Poipu Beach before heading back to enjoy our final dinner with our chef.
Day 6 – After shooting our last sunrise together, we’ll head back and enjoy a complete breakfast together as a group, talk about the days adventure where we will focus on packing up and then shuttling everyone back to the airport and reality; there will certainly not be any dry eyes as we reflect on the amazing time we had together here in Paradise

“I’ve had the pleasure of joining James on three workshops so far with a fourth already booked. Having previously traveled thru Death Valley, I knew first-hand how photogenic and challenging the area is. My experience went far beyond my expectations! It was exceptional. James is a masterful photographer who works exceptionally well with his students and co-instructors. His expertise afforded me the opportunity to polish and refine my skills while photographing this exceptional landscape. His advanced ground-work in scouting the best sites and views for us to photograph greatly enhanced the experience. My initial experience with James was fun, informative, and flawless. I know of no better way to photograph the beautiful areas he has selected for his trips except to join him!”

“Early this summer I came across a blog post about a photo workshop with James Brandon. I jumped at it and signed up because, ever since I had seen Peter Lik’s Gallery in Las Vegas, I was smitten by one particular image of Mesa Arch that was for sale at the cost of an average home. I wanted to take that image on my own and hang it in my home. The workshop was amazing. Both James and his co-instructor Mike are very accomplished photographers and complement each other well. Very helpful in every way and very friendly and fun to be with. The group was great! I shot about a thousand images which included the one I came for, which is now hanging above my dining room table! I learned a lot and feel that I am a better photographer. I will go back in a heart beat.”
Workshops Attended: Death Valley, Ozark Fall Colors, Big Sur & SLO
“I enjoyed my first workshop so much, I’ve already booked another!
The small group size allows James to really spend time with each student and it also means the workshop can be flexible to maximize the shooting opportunities.
I’ve been taking photographs for over 30 years but thanks to James I’ve started making photographs and that is far more satisfying.”

“James’s landscape workshop, held in Death Valley National Park, was exactly what I needed. The 4 days were filled with opportunities to learn and practice the art of landscape photography. He planned at least three photo walks a day, around three types of lighting (sunrise, sunset, night sky) in a range of geographic settings within the park — including a ghost town with wonderful old structures.
There’s enough down time to download photos and engage in a little processing, but not so much that it would take away from the actual photographic opportunities throughout the park.
By the end of the course, I had a good jump start on using Lightroom for post processing RAW files and an overview of the capabilities Photoshop has to offer and sufficient photos that 3 months later, I’m still working on them!”
Workshops Attended: Moab
“Every aspect of James’s workshop far exceeded my expectations. The experience was so much more than simply a photography workshop; it was an amazing adventure! I learned a lot about photography, captured some amazing images and really appreciated his ability to put everyone at ease. Even more memorable though, was the adventure aspect of the trip; the wild weather, the crazy hours and all the laughter we shared.
Thanks for such an inspiring week at Arches and Canyonlands National Parks! I will definitely see be back again at a future workshop!”
